The South African Student’s Congress has noted with Great Concern ongoing workers protest at both UNISA and DUT, the protest emanates from poor working conditions and wage negotiation breakdown.
SASCO supports NEHAWU UNISA and DUT workers in general in their demand for better wages and working conditions, through institutional autonomy our institutions are now operating as business entities where a vice chancellor acts a CEO that appoints and dismisses workers willy-nilly.
The privatization of services has no workers interest at heart but rather a maximization of profit for services providers and their corrupt appointees at the expense of workers. SASCO maintain its position against casualization of workers and privatization of services in our institutions.
SASCO, therefore, calls on both UNISA and DUT management to heed on workers’ demands.
It is our considered view that the strike at DUT and UNISA has affected registration and applications adversely. We, therefore, call on DUT and UNISA to extend their applications and registration date without additional costs.
SASCO Officials will be meeting SRC and NEHAWU to get an update on the negotiations and craft a way forward.
We wish to reassure students and applicants not to lose hope; SASCO will fight tooth and nail until student issues are attended to unreservedly.
