“Thus the awakening of the dead in those revolutionaries served the purpose of glorifying the new struggles, not of parodying the old; of magnifying the given task in the imagination, not recoiling from its solution in reality; of finding once more the spirit of the revolution, not making its ghost walk again.” Karl Marx
The month of April in South Africa is remembered for two (2) things, the historic democratic breakthrough and widely celebrated as the heroes and heroines month. This week’s edition is inspired by the concept of freedom broadly and the freedom fighters of our land.
The articles are not meant at boasting about our revolutionary gains and chanting slogans in their honor but are inspired by the strides made by our forebears in reminding ourselves as the current generation that the struggles we face can be defeated. We find courage knowing that the different generations obtained their mission and forge ahead with the pursuit of the battles inherited from the past.
In this edition, we have four articles which are written by a mix of generations of the student movement. The articles look into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lessons that can be drawn from the heroes and heroines of our land, and reflect on struggles ahead. We have the following;
– Student Activism in the current epoch: Homeless at home ~ by Cde Xolile Nkabinde
– Systems change not climate change ~ by Cde Lebohang Ntuli
– Reflections and lessons: Zanyiwe Winfred Madikizela Mandela ~ by Cde Thembeka Dumane
– COVID-19, Online Education and the inclusive way forward ~ by Cde Luzuko Bashman
It is our firm belief that the articles contained in this week’s edition will spark debates, prompt actions by our activists and some require responses to deepen the culture of reading and writing that was at the risk of being eroded.
