“A country that does not know how to read and write is easy to deceive”. Che Guevara
Welcome to our first edition for the year 2020 and for the 21st National Executive Committee. This edition comes at a time where the country is faced by COVID-19 Pandemic which has seen the country witness an anticipated lockdown, after the Commander in Chief declared a State of National Disaster. This is quite a unique experience for those born from 1994 onwards as they have never witnessed our army on the field. Now the army is on the side of the people, direct contrast of what the army would ordinarily do under the apartheid.
This in many ways is a sign of maturity of our democracy and test of the legitimacy of the South African state in the eyes of its people.
This month’s edition comes during the Heroes month, a month where most of our liberation icons are either active or departed. This is a month where we commemorate the likes of President Oliver Tambo, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Cde Solomon Mahlangu, Dr. Zola Skhweyiya, Cde Chris Hani and many others. April is a month of Freedom for South Africans.
We would ordinarily cover 3 articles but because this is our first edition, we have opted to cover four articles and release another 3 articles the Second week of April on Thursday, 09/04/2020. So this week we will cover the following articles:
– The wiping of the next Palestinian generations, the world watches by Cde Athenkosi Mabona
– When Dying Would Be Better: What COVID-19 reveals about inequality by Cde Daniel Lediga
– 60th Commemoration of the Sharpville Massacre and Reflections on the 26 years of Democracy in South Africa by Cde Sinoxolo Duma Mthombeni
-Are Human Rights devoid of economic rights: Looking close into the South African Post Colonial Human Rights scenario by Cde Ayanda Zikhali
This edition takes a central focus on Human Rights as we commemorate 60 years since the Sharpville massacre, whilst reflecting on the 25 years since the dawn of democracy and looking at the present challenges like COVID-19. These are insightful articles which will surely spark provocative debates and critical debates, on what becomes our way forward as a nation.
